Why does slow breathing help you calm down?

A 2018 systematic review links slow breathing, under ten breaths a minute, with higher heart rate variability and with more comfort, relaxation and alertness, and less anxiety. The exact mechanisms are still debated.

A randomised study published in 2023 compared five minutes a day of different breathing exercises and meditation over a month. Exercises built around a long exhale improved mood a little more than meditation. The effect is modest and was measured over a short period.

What is coherent breathing (5-5)?

Breathe in for five seconds and out for five, which makes six breaths a minute. It is a steady rhythm that is easy to follow, often called coherent breathing, and a good place to start.

Breathe through your nose if you can, letting your belly rise as you breathe in. If five seconds feels long, start with four.

And calming 4-6 breathing?

Breathe in for four seconds and out for six. An exhale longer than the inhale helps you slow down. It is the rhythm used at the end of the Find calm session in EMDR Pocket.

How do you do box breathing?

Four equal counts of four seconds: breathe in, hold, breathe out, hold. The regular square helps anchor your attention. If the holds feel uncomfortable, shorten them.

What is 4-7-8 breathing?

Breathe in for four seconds, hold for seven, breathe out for eight. It is often suggested in the evening. Studies are scarce: a small 2022 trial measured immediate changes in heart rate and blood pressure, which does not support lasting conclusions.

The seven-second hold can feel uncomfortable. Shorten it freely, and stop if you feel light-headed.

How does EMDR Pocket guide your breathing?

The free Guided breathing session offers these four rhythms. A light and a countdown pace each breath in and out, with chimes when you close your eyes. It lasts three minutes by default and can run up to twenty.

Breathing also closes most other sessions, such as 4-7-8 in Before sleep.
